Recent claims by Helen Morgan MP regarding accessibility funding for Whitchurch Railway Station do not reflect the public record.
In May 2024, it was announced and widely reported, including in the Whitchurch Herald, that Access for All funding for Whitchurch Station had been approved during the wash-up period before the General Election. At the time, Ms Morgan herself publicly welcomed the decision, stating that the Government had approved funding for step-free access and that existing lift designs would now be taken forward.
That funding has since been withdrawn by the Labour government. This was a political decision taken after the election, not an unfunded or imaginary promise.
It is therefore wrong to suggest that the money never existed, or to shift responsibility away from those now in power. If funding is approved and later cancelled, accountability lies with the government that chose to cancel it.
North Shropshire Conservatives will continue to lobby firmly and constructively to ensure Whitchurch receives the infrastructure and investment it deserves. As a local association, we have a strong track record of helping to deliver real outcomes for residents — including the new swimming and leisure centre and the new medical centre, both of which demonstrate what can be achieved when commitment is matched by delivery.
We will keep pressing the case for Whitchurch Station, and we will always be honest with residents about where decisions are made and who is responsible for them.
