Shropshire has a proud and living connection to our Armed Forces. RAF Shawbury. Tern Hill Barracks. Serving personnel, veterans, and military families woven into the fabric of our county.
That’s why Helen Morgan’s recent vote in Parliament matters.
Helen Morgan voted in favour of removing protections for Armed Forces personnel and veterans under the Northern Ireland Troubles legislation. This change reopens the door to prosecutions and civil actions decades after the events, leaving veterans facing the prospect of legal pursuit in old age for actions carried out while serving their country.
Let’s be absolutely clear: only Conservatives voted against this move.
Conservatives believe in the rule of law, but we also believe in fairness. It cannot be right that those who served the UK under orders, often in unimaginably dangerous conditions, are left exposed while terrorists and perpetrators exploit endless legal processes. Veterans deserve certainty, dignity, and protection, not a lifetime of legal anxiety.
Helen Morgan chose to side with those who believe there should be no special consideration for service personnel who risked their lives for this country. That is her right as an MP, but voters in North Shropshire have a right to know where she stands.
We stand with our Armed Forces.
We stand with our veterans.
And we will always speak up for those who served, not sacrifice them to political convenience.
