A ‘sure start’ for county’s children continues

Thousands of parents and young children are using the free play services and support groups available at Sure Start Children’s Centres across Shropshire.
The centres provide weekly sessions for parents with youngsters under five, giving them somewhere for their youngsters to enjoy a child-friendly environment and for them to access advice and support.
Free services are available throughout pregnancy and for newborns with the Bumps to Babes and the BURPS breastfeeding group right through to toddler groups and family stay and play sessions.
And although Shropshire Council is making £1.5million savings in children’s services over three years no centres will be affected.
Councillor Keith Barrow, leader of the council, said: “The Sure Start staff across the county meet thousands of families every week and the feedback from those using the service has been incredible.
“We make sure we listen to people and we know that these services mean a lot.”
Sure Start provides early years services, advice about all aspects of bringing up young children from weaning to potty training, support for children and parents with special needs and links with Job Centre Plus for support with jobs, training and money.
Each week various opportunities are provided for parents or carers to stay with their babies or children under five and to enjoy the child-friendly environment and free healthy snack.
At every session visitors will find different activities including playdough, arts and crafts, books, toys, outdoor play, singing, stories and much more.
Services are available from the Sure Start bases and staff also visit other venues and offer activities. Sure Start Children’s Centre membership is free. For more details or to find a venue in your area visit www.shropshire.gov.uk
